SVS field tests of the global positioning system (GPS)
locator program "etrace" have proven to be of great value in
enhancing communication between SVS administrators and direct service staff in
the community.
Etrace is a service that tracks group locations via satellite through the use
of a GPS chip in the Nextel 2-way radios that each SVS group carries. The
phones' positions are displayed in "real time" via a map link
available on the Program Director's computer.
According to SVS Program Director Teresa Moore, etrace has allowed her to
quickly pinpoint groups when there is need to locate them. It also offers information regarding the
speed at which the vehicle is traveling.
Etrace has proven a valuable tool for program administrators. It helps
them both ensure that groups are adhering to their planned schedules and it
acts as a significant safety enhancement in emergency situations.
